My name is Elizabeth but most people call me Liz. I was born in Mexico City and first came to California when I was three years old. At age 15, I was taken away from my mom and went into two different foster care homes.
By the time I was a junior I was behind one full year of credits but I wanted to graduate with all my heart. I took adult classes and worked so hard for two years. This is why I’m proud of my high school diploma.
I am currently working full-time and am the legal guardian of my teen-aged brother. My goals for the upcoming year are to accomplish two classes per semester towards my AA degree and to earn As and Bs in my classes. I hope to eventurally transfer to a 4-year university and earn my Bachelors degree. My interests include sewing, running and fashion.

Hi. I’m Dominique and I’m a Freshman at Cal State Northridge majoring in Psychology. I entered the foster care system when I was 3 days old and was never issued a Birth Certificate or Social Security Number. This has made transitioning out of the system very difficult. I could not work or received financial aid for college. I had to take a year off of school while I applied for documentation. My biggest accomplishment this year, and in life, was finally receiving my Birth Certificate. The application process was overwhelming and stressful, but with the support of my family I have been able to remain optimistic and determined.
My dream is to eventually get my Masters in Psychology and open my own practice to work with young people. I want to ensure that what happened to me does not happen to anyone else.
I’ve been lucky to have extended family in my life and don’t know where I’d be without support from different organizations, my family and friends.
